Tags: Criticism, Introduction, Literary, Practice, Theory

Literature is a field of study that no doubt that most people confuse with all the “isms.” Charles Bressler book is a useful tool in sorting out all these “isms”. This book is well organized: Each chapter focuses on a different theory and discusses the theory of historical development, assumptions, methodology, and even questions for analysis (a great help when Drafting of a document). The chapter concludes with two attempts of applying this particular theory. It is the most popular and widely used book among Lit majors at my university. And it’s one you really should own.

4 years of study of English, and I’ve never sat down to read literary theory, until I take a course. Bressler book helped me enormously to sort the confused mass, the theory is. It has about a dozen major movements, such as formalism, reader-response criticism, structuralism, post-structuralism, and also includes chapters on “Extra” on individual theorists such as Barthes, Levi-Strauss, etc. The explanations are concise. I also like how the author turns to the theory of a professor examines the perspective of the student: It breaks complex concepts into manageable pieces, without compromising the essence of the theory.
Another book I found interesting * Literary Theory: An Anthology Ed * Julie Rivkin. Unlike book Bressler is a very large and very heavy, but useful nonetheless.
In fact, after reading more about literary theory, I’m not afraid of him. So if you’re like me, a “new” in literary theory, you’d better start with this book.

After looking at the third edition I bought this book for a course I teach. The fourth edition contains many changes, all for the worse. The literary selections in the 4th Edition are not chosen so far are the paragraphs in the chapters on New Criticism and feminism stylistically awkward and often confusing and repetitive, not to mention the questionable assertion of facts (that n ‘ there are no voices in feminism between Pisa and Wollstonecraft!). Above all, this question is obviously painful rushed to the press in time for classes in fall 2006 because it contains typos about every five or six pages. The chapter on feminism alone at least ten errors, eg ( “One in the same”, “less” instead of “fear” that a mistake has been adopted by the third edition), “The last inconsistency”! !, the number of verb for “a variety of [plural], etc. The publication of an apology to all purchasers of this book is to be sent with a list of errata. On the positive side: I tell my students I do not penalize too much for small errors, when the manual contains so many years!

The number of user-friendly guides to the initial level of literary theory is no more than three or four. Literary Theory: An Introduction happy, Theory and Practice by Charles E. Bressler is one of them. Must be designed for a text on the theory for the beginner, the author of a number of basic concepts. First, the text needs to minimize the inevitable influx of dense jargon, while maximizing a clear interpretation of jargon. Secondly, the author’s overview of set theory in a meaningful context that enables the development of the theory to fix the trace starting point – usually with the Greeks – to this day. Thirdly, the author must define the essence of the theory – not an easy task, because – so the reader can connect to various aspects of related disciplines such as linguistics, psychology and economics into a coherent overall concept . Fourthly, the text must also close analysis and summaries of major schools of theory – again not an easy task because there are considerable differences of opinion, even if they are recognized experts to deserve what areas Web integration of theory. Finally, the author has the reader how the transcendent leap of confusion theory to the concrete using this theory with examples from the practice of writing that shows this theory to show in action. Bressler done it all and does it with flair, makes most of his academic rivals in the shade.
Part of the reason for its success is its simple but not simplistic as each school to confirm the theory. He begins each school with an introduction to the fore, his analysis provides a real application in this regard, even the rank beginner. It follows a scholarly historical development, which includes assumptions which hold the proponents of this school. He then discusses the methodology used by the proponents of abstract values translated into reality. What I have been particularly useful in its final issues for student analysis and testing, from the consideration of the specific text of a certain literary lens.
There are other introductory guides to do that much Bressler precedent, but is equally good. This text is useful beyond the introductory course in the theory. For postgraduate seminars, a refresher course in the basics or to see, which should in theory, the reality of literary texts, literary theories, a work that often read in the reading for a lifetime, that ’s extends well beyond the requirements to achieve a college course.

So far, I have a better introduction to literary theory: Charles E. Bressler ’s literature: a introducction, theory and practice. I have been teaching Spanish to advanced students in high school and I was ready to find a good book on literary theory in my classes. Unlike other books on the subject of the book (Terry Eagleton on literary theory comes to mind), the book of Mr. Bressler is clearly not only in the summary of the various schools of literary criticism, but it does what they have some books on the subject, far Abstracts: It is accurate and detailed basic principles to every school in the critical analysis of actual literary texts will follow the principles of each of these schools. I have one semester to the entire literary theory in the school as a student and I learn more with the book of Mr. Bressler, when I learned in this class. I can not think of a better book for reading teachers and classes for undergraduates and graduate students of literature in any language. I commend Mr. Bressler to clarify an issue which is to inform ed the reputation of darkness and only a few individuals. In his book “Literary Theory, in my opinion, is only available to someone interested in this topic.
